내일 역사적 회담, 2차 ‘핵 담판’ 결과는 - 고명현 박사 대담
For more we have with us Dr. Go Myong-hyun , a research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.
- The second North Korea-U.S. summit is almost upon us. On Wednesday they will meet for the second time in 8 months. How important is this meeting?
- Perhaps the main difference this time is that they will be meeting over two days. They are scheduled to have dinner and a brief one-on-one meeting on Wednesday before the actual summit talks on Thursday. What do you make of this schedule?
- Kim arrived in Vietnam today after a 65-hour train journey directly from North Korea. Why did he take this route? What do you think he was trying to show?
- Trump has been making various comments about the upcoming summit and they have been interpreted in different ways. The latest comment that stands out though is that he said he will be, quote, "happy" as long as North Korea does not conduct any nuclear or missile testing. But he also emphasized that sanctions will remain on North Korea. Is he trying to lower expectations on the outcome of the summit or is he trying to put pressure on Pyeongyang?
a - Which side is more desperate at the moment?
- Working-level talks have been taking place for several days. Of course we don't know what has been going on in those discussions, but one of the suggestions has been that the two sides are working towards the establishment of an American liaison office in Pyeongyang. Do you think that may be something the two sides could agree upon this time around?
- There is also a lot of talk whether North Korea will agree to dismantle the Yeongbyeon nuclear facility. How important is that facility and do you see any signs that Pyeongyang is ready to give it up yet?
- There is expectation towards some sort of agreement towards a declaration to end the Korean War as well. South Korea and China have previously been expected to be involved in such an agreement, but the Blue House seems to have given its blessing to North Korea and the U.S. to come up with an agreement on their own. The Blue House spokesperson recently said the possibility of the two sides agreeing to something of that effect at this summit remains open. Do you think it could be in the works?
- What should we look out for in the next couple of days?
